Lead Pipes Right to Know Act Signed by Governor

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act into law. Officially named S.5112/A.6115, this legislation is aimed at safeguarding the health of New Yorkers from the significant public health risk posed by lead pipes. This legislation mandates the transparent disclosure of information regarding the number and locations of lead pipes, ensuring easy access for the public. By making this data available, state and federal resources can be efficiently directed to support local initiatives focused on the removal of lead pipes impacting New York's drinking water. The Act requires water utilities throughout the state to publicly share information on the presence and locations of lead service lines in their distribution systems, enabling individuals and policymakers to comprehend the full extent of the lead service line issue. Governor Hochul emphasizes that lead poisoning is a serious threat to the well-being of all New Yorkers, and this legislation, leading the nation, is a crucial step in protecting residents from the harmful effects of lead pipes. State Senator Gustavo Rivera expresses gratitude to Governor Hochul for signing the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act, emphasizing its role in addressing environmental injustice and ensuring access to clean water for communities across the state. Assemblymember Amy Paulin highlights the urgency of lead poisoning as a public health issue, particularly affecting children in low-income families, and commends Governor Hochul for taking action to make childhood lead exposure a thing of the past.
